Baby products you don’t really need

As I’ve discussed before in OMG Baby Consignment, baby “necessities” are a huge consumer market. And if you don’t have the money? Or if you’re just not buying into it, then what do you have?

Imagination and make-shift resources! This is something I LOVE doing–figuring out how creative I can be by doing without or better yet, making do with what I have (like in my make-shift bed post). Check out my baby changing station!

To market, to market to buy a fat pig

Home again, home again, jiggity jig.
(Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I’ve been reading too many nursery rhymes.)

The little white sweater

I’m all about second-hand clothes. It takes much more resources of every kind to make something  new. Like Jody from Thrift Shopping Buzz, I always discover amazing finds without having to spend a fortune. When I worked in D.C. on the hill, I bought all my clothes from a consignment shop near Eastern Market. When I lived in Alaska, I worked at a Goodwill type store called Value Village—(my ALL-TIME favorite job, besides packing fish eggs in an Alaskan cannery.)  Most of the clothes I wear now are from Value Village I bought back in 2001. My jeans finally wore through the knee and I ripped them last week while putting them on. Bummer. Guess I won’t be wearing these to dinner.

Ahhh, but I digress. This post is about a tiny, crocheted sweater. Honest it is.

OMG Baby consignment

When I first visited my OB, I received a welcome bag. It had a few pamphlets about first pregnancies, blah, blah, blah. Three-fourths of the bag contained advertisements for “stuff” the baby would “need.” The Babies R Us pamphlet teetered on top.

As I flipped through it, my eyes grew large and I handed it to my man. “Is she serious? Why is this even in here? Does she have stock in Babies R Us?”

The farmer’s market down the street

So, we’ve been to scope out the Farmer’s Markets around the area. Let me show you what we found right down the street. Seriously, we can ride our bicycles.

Norfolk, VA Farmer’s Market

We hadn’t been to the Five Points Community Farmer’s Market in Norfolk for a full year. Realizing that not every town has  a huge farmer’s market like the one I grew up with in south Georgia, I decided to revisit it with a fresh attitude and stop being prejudiced against small, overpriced markets that are doing the best they can. After venting in the organic food post about what Norfolk didn’t have, I decided to write about what they do have.
