Zero waste with food

I’ve learned from Mrs. Green at My Zero Waste  about the shocking pounds of food we waste annually. By her bringing it to my attention, I attempt to clean out my fridge more often—because that’s really where my waste originates.

To market, to market, jiggity jig.

Visiting the “local” market sounded exciting! In south Florida where citrus blooms and food grows year round, everything just had to be fabulous, right?

Wrong.

Recycle those holiday cans for cash

Remember recycling cans (and sometimes bottles) equals cash. Turn those holiday parties into a little extra change.

We found this in Wisconsin the week we moved there but don’t think we ever used it but twice because we’d given up soda.

What’s been goin’ on

I’ve been at mama’s helping her pack for about a month. I’ve tried and tried to pinpoint something different or green that we’ve been doing here. But mostly we’ve just been packing (in boxes we already had, mama got from work, or I’ve pulled out of recycling bins, yay.) And cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Compost gold mine!

So, there is this huge pile of sticks and leaves in the back yard. I have no idea how long it’s been there. Years? It’s right along the edge of the woods. While Mr. Wonderful mowed the grass, I broke up sticks so we could create a fire and placed the leaves in the diaper compost. Lo and behold, look what we found!

What I found in the yard

While out gardening during Memorial Day weekend, I discovered new flowers and even more new flowers. The woman who owned the house before us was a true lover of flowers. I’ve never seen so many different kinds. A different bunch seem to bloom weekly. I don’t even know their names.

Here are some of the flowers I found just weeks ago– along with this bird feeder.

Homemade bird feeder from license plate

Did I show you these?
When we moved in, the previous owner had left them in the back yard.
What a creative idea!

Press ‘n seal substitute

Maybe someone out there has a  better idea. A lot of the products we are using are not green. Once we finish them, we try to find a greener, or more creative idea. Being frugal is part of being waste free, and I’m not going to throw something out if I still have some left.

For example—Press n’ seal. IMG_9842 Continue reading
